Tell us a bit about The Seshen.
THE SESHEN
The Seshen is a band that makes music that defies a singular genre. We’re based in the San Francisco Bay Area and we’re known for our dynamic live performance.

You have a new project coming out on October 6th titled 'Nowhere.'
Can you preview us on this upcoming release?
THE SESHEN - LALIN
‘Nowhere’ is a vulnerable look at what it means for two people to separate. Aki and I are bandmates but also were together for a very long time. ‘Nowhere’ shares a little bit of that story and how we’ve made it through.

What was unique to this album that differed from your past releases?
THE SESHEN - AKI
The writing process felt a bit less labored over in certain ways. Because we were living separately I felt we had less time to overthink things and not get bogged down by little details too early in the process of writing a song.

Can you tell us about the album cover for 'Nowhere.'
THE SESHEN
The album cover was created by Tessa Shimizu. It is a photo of me but distorted and it resonated to me. How it looks is how it felt - hard to decipher, darkness, an emotional internal process.

Tell us a bit about the single & visuals for 'Hold Me.'
THE SESHEN
We’ve been a band for so long we figured it would be lovely to take a look back at our time together. There’s imagery dating back a decade. It shows that we have grown so much and have been through so much.
We are a family.

Can you talk about being able to navigate the darkness?
THE SESHEN
Navigating darkness isn’t easy but we can’t have light without dark. We all go through devastating times, trauma, heartbreak. For me, having rituals - meditation, nature, my spiritual practice - help me to stay grounded. Counseling/therapy, friends, laying in bed and doing nothing, crying, laughing….
I allow space for the feelings. The only way to the other side is through it.
ETHEREAL.PRESS
In your music, you fuse many genres, from R&B, synth-pop, and electronic music.
Why do you choose to combine so many different genres in your tracks?
THE SESHEN
We are informed by so many different styles of music, so it’s only natural that they come through in our music.
When we’re writing, none of this feels like a conscious choice. We really are just following inspiration more than aiming to make a certain type of song.

What's on the horizon creatively that you're excited about?
THE SESHEN
We’re excited to bring this album to life and get back to playing shows. There are more stories to tell around this and we’re looking forward to sharing them in a lot of ways.

What's next for The Seshen?
THE SESHEN - AKI
We’re hoping to share these songs live and continue writing. We’re also looking to collaborate more in the future. We’ve got a lot of friends that are making amazing music and we’re hoping to work with people outside of the band a bit as well!
