IT HELPS US OUT A TON
Arriving at Red Rocks early to work with opener Hiatus Kaiyote, I had some time to kill while the band was getting ready. During this time, before crowds were let in, I sat stage left and watched Masego's sound check.
Witnessing stuff like this before the show is always insightful. I have no formal education in music production, so seeing all the moving parts it takes to produce a live performance supplies an understanding of its logistics.
Masego sounded great in sound check, and I knew I wanted to cover his set for ETHEREAL.PRESS on top of my work with Hiatus Kaiyote. Before his set, I met with a guy who flew out from Canada to see/photograph his first Red Rocks set. One of his good friends was affiliated with Masego's team and gave him access to the show. We talked at length about our experiences with concert photography and the music industry.
Following that excellent conversation, we headed towards the photo pit for the start of Masego's set. Masego came out with a ton of energy, jamming on his saxophone and moonwalking on stage. The vocal range of Masego was top-tier, showcasing a true mastery of live performance.
It added another layer witnessing his set live, seeing not only how skilled as a vocalist he was, but also as a dancer and entertainer.
I would highly recommend watching one of Masego's sets live.
