Little Big is a ‘Russian Rave’ band who has been creating satirized viral videos for years. From including imagery of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un having an intimate relationship with a nuclear missile to a song titled, ‘Big Dick’ (NSFW), the band explores a wide array of taboo subject matter. During the start of the Russia - Ukraine invasion the band (among others) were forced to flee the country due to security concerns(1).
We were looking forward to covering the band to experience one of their high energy sets in person. Often the smaller cities in the United States don't receive acts from abroad due to logistical issues. When I saw that Little Big was going to be in Denver, I made sure to get coverage for that date.
Unfortunately it was a night of bad luck. My camera gear corrupted 95% of the images from the set leaving us with mostly corrupted images (see below) forcing us to edit in JPG. Additionally, I had planned coverage to interview the band following the show, but due to circumstances beyond our control, I was unable to interview the band on-site.
Given all those external factors out of the way, I'd love to share my thoughts from the set - as well as - my coverage.
Little Big blew us away with their live performance. I ended up showing up right as the set started and was thrown into chaos upon arrival. There’s few times in the 100s of live sets we’ve seen where a band brought so much energy to the table. They came out chanting ‘WE ARE LITTLE BIG’ over and over with insane crowd engagement. During the set, we hear everything from Hardstyle to Industrial Techno to Trance and everything in-between.
I couldn't help but view their performance as social commentary given the current geo-political circumstances surrounding it. The venue was HOT - like surface of the sun HOT. Even with the insane internal temperature, the band threw it all out on the line to put on an unbelievable show.
This is one of those concert experiences you only get if you truly love and pay attention to music. So few get to experience a band like Little Big (with international notoriety) this close up unless it’s outside of Europe / major metropolitan cities. I’ve seen footage from arena tours with this band preforming with Tommy Cash in Europe in front of thousands, not to mention countless festival performances.
Little Big is 100% a band to experience in person and I would recommend everyone to see them live! This show was one of my personal favorites of the year and hope to see more from Little Big soon!
